What is Archetypal Breathwork?

Archetypal Breathwork™ is a trauma-sensitive practice that pairs a continuous, conscious connected breath rhythm with Carl Jung's archetypal psychology. The breath opens an expanded state of awareness; the archetypes give a psychological map for the inner material that surfaces there.

The two roots of the practice

The practice draws on two bodies of work. The first is Jung's archetypal psychology — the idea that recurring patterns of psychic energy (the Shadow, the Sovereign, the Warrior, the Magician, the Lover) shape how we perceive, decide, and relate. The second is the contemporary neuroscience of respiration: breath as a direct lever on the autonomic nervous system, interoception, and emotion regulation (Porges' polyvagal theory; Zaccaro et al., 2018; Balban et al., 2023).

How a session works

A session is held in a small circle. Participants lie down and follow a continuous conscious connected breath — no pause between the inhale and the exhale — over an extended arc. This engages the vagal pathways that regulate arousal and shifts the felt sense of the body's internal state enough that emotional material becomes accessible in a way ordinary talking rarely allows. Pace, depth, and the choice to pause remain with the participant throughout.

Two journeys

The practice takes two main forms: The Shadow Journey™ — a descent to meet and reintegrate exiled parts of the self — and The Inner Council™, a working model of four archetypal patterns used to build leadership presence and regulation under pressure. See also Jungian breathwork for the psychological framing.

Who it is for

Individuals working through a transition, and leaders and teams building nervous-system regulation and coherence under pressure. It is inner work with a professional frame — not clinical therapy, not a wellness experience. Group circles run in Kreuzberg, Berlin; one-to-one arcs and team programmes are delivered by Human Works LAB; multi-day retreats are held with the Roots Within team in Colombia.

Origin and facilitation

Archetypal Breathwork™ is founder-led by Erich Joseph — certified Conscious Connected Breathwork facilitator (Spirit of Breath), certified Sedona Method facilitator, and M.A. in Business & Organizational Psychology. Facilitation and emergency response follow the Spirit of Breath training standard.
